UP COMING EVENTS FOR ALL

CoolTan Arts Largactyl Shuffle: May Day - Revolution, Social Change and Mental Health 16 May 2009 at 12 noon Voted one of London’s top ten walks by TimeOut. Is Labour Day (1 May) just another public holiday or a celebration of workers struggles? For our guided walk in May the CoolTan Arts Largactyl Shuffle will explore the history, heritage and origins of Labour Day and its relevance to the inhabitants of Southwark. Travel back in time and discover dynamic social reformers like the pioneering Victorian social worker Octavia Hill in her struggles to improve women and children’s living in Southwark. Walk in the footsteps of Henry Maudsley’s vision in his quest to improve the lives and treatment of people experiencing mental distress. Join us as we explore the rich tapestry of famous & infamous local inhabitants, discover local architecture and uncover the history of mental health in Southwark. Along the route walkers will be treated to a ‘Butterfly Metamorphosis’- spy a Camberwell butterfly along the walk, keep your eyes open in case one flies past you. We meet at 12 noon at the entrance of Maudsley Hospital in Denmark Hill SE5 8AZ, and we walk to the Tate Modern SE1 9TG through Camberwell. The walk is 5 miles in total and takes 3-4 hours. You are free to leave the walk at any point or join along the way. There will be an opportunity for a 20 minute break at CoolTan Arts for refreshments and to have a look at artwork created by CoolTan participants. The walk is free, but a voluntary contribution would be appreciated and all money goes towards keeping the Largactyl walk shuffling. In a nutshell, come wearing sensible shoes and bring some food, water and sun lotion. Call us on 07985658443 if you want more information or can’t find us on the day.
